The photograph does not merely preserve what was there. It also preserves relationships between things that may not survive together.
The shadow demonstrates a broader principle: the present continuously produces evidence whose significance may become visible only after the structures that created it have disappeared.
Structural Principle
A structure does not have to be material to organise what we see. Some structures exist only through relationships between objects, positions, conditions and time.
The photograph trains us to distinguish between things and the conditions through which things become structurally connected. Material permanence can make architecture appear more significant than a passing shadow. Structurally, however, permanence and importance are not the same.
