Instead, expectations emerged gradually from everyday behaviour, and the technology itself began supplying information that made those expectations easier to form.
When Silence Became Visible
A message was sent and received almost immediately. The system might show that it had been delivered. Increasingly, it could also show that it had been read, that the recipient was online or when they had last been active. These small pieces of metadata created a historically unusual situation: senders could know with increasing confidence that their message had entered another person’s field of awareness.
Later reconstruction research called this Reception Visibility.
Older communication systems had preserved an epistemic gap between sending and receiving. Someone posting a letter did not know precisely when it was opened. Even email initially left considerable uncertainty about when a message had actually been noticed. Messaging platforms reduced that uncertainty through tiny status indicators: delivered, read, online, last active.
The significance of these indicators went far beyond convenience. Once reception became visible, silence acquired a different meaning. The systems could represent novelty very efficiently. They were much less capable of representing actual importance. A notification announced that something had happened, not whether the event deserved immediate human attention. That judgement remained with the recipient, who therefore had to perform a continuous series of small urgency assessments throughout the day.
People called this notification overload, which was accurate but incomplete. Notifications did not merely compete for attention. Many carried a potential social obligation. An advertisement could usually be ignored without consequence. A colleague’s question might eventually require an answer. A friend’s message could contain an emotional expectation. A request to coordinate a date required a decision. Behind the notification was often another person, and that changed the structural character of the interruption.
The Rise of Communicative Open Loops
Later Struction research became particularly interested in what happened when a message had been received and understood but could not yet be answered. Nothing visible might happen. The recipient continued working, travelling, eating or resting. Cognitively, however, a small task had been created: reply later, check something first, remember to send the information, think about the answer, ask someone else, confirm the date.
These became known as Communicative Open Loops.
Each loop was usually trivial. Their accumulation was not. A person could be sitting quietly on a sofa while knowing that several messages remained unanswered, two emails required clarification, someone was waiting for confirmation of an appointment, a family message deserved a thoughtful response and a colleague still needed information. From the outside, the person appeared to be doing nothing. Structurally, they remained surrounded by unfinished communication relationships.
This helped explain a characteristic experience repeatedly described in the records of the period: people could be free without feeling entirely free. Contemporary explanations often focused on workload, distraction and information overload, all of which mattered. The later reconstructions identified something more specific beneath them — the burden of known incompletion.
Earlier, a professional request might remain physically in an office while the employee was at home. It existed, but not necessarily within the person’s current perceptual environment. The smartphone changed that relationship. Open work could now travel with the individual. A message did not have to wait in the workplace because the workplace’s communication layer had effectively entered the pocket.
The result was historically important. Leaving work no longer necessarily meant leaving awareness of work behind.
When Boundaries Moved From Architecture Into the Person
For centuries, places had done more than separate activities. They had separated information. Offices closed. Shops had opening hours. Mail arrived at intervals. Telephones were attached to locations. These external conditions created periods during which communication was simply unavailable, and therefore did not require an individual decision.
Digital communication weakened those boundaries. Non-work no longer followed automatically from leaving the workplace. The distinction had to be created cognitively and socially instead.

A physical door can be closed once. A permanently available communication channel must be ignored repeatedly. Some read messages quickly but postponed replies, while others found the very existence of an unanswered message uncomfortable. The technology accommodated these differences only imperfectly because many digital platforms had been designed around activity and engagement. The individual’s need for temporary unavailability was not necessarily the organising principle of the system.
It therefore had to be recreated.
Reconstructed Unavailability
Do Not Disturb. Focus modes. Muted conversations. Notification schedules. Offline status indicators. These functions became increasingly sophisticated during the 2020s and 2030s, yet their very existence revealed a structural paradox.
Communication technology had first eliminated much of natural unavailability. It then required new technology to reconstruct it.
Later research called this Reconstructed Unavailability.
In earlier communication environments, being unreachable had often been the default condition outside particular places or times. Now it became a setting. A person increasingly had to configure the system so that others could not temporarily reach them, or at least so that the attempt to do so would not demand immediate attention.
This altered the normative baseline. What had once been technically impossible could now appear to require social explanation. Why was your phone off? Why did you not see the message? Why were you unavailable?
Such questions only made sense in a world in which permanent technical reachability had already become normal.

Communication systems of the 2040s increasingly attempted to transmit more than messages. They began transmitting expectations.

All could help, but volume alone proved to be a poor measure of burden. A hundred messages that clearly required no action could create less strain than five ambiguous messages from people who might be waiting for an answer.

By 2049, this seems almost self-evident. Yet the principle had to be reasserted against an infrastructure whose historic achievement had been precisely the removal of temporal and spatial barriers to communication.

The interpretation changed accordingly. What had often been treated as a problem of personal discipline could now be understood as a problem of distributed boundary responsibility.
People did not simply need to become better at switching off.
Their systems had to become better at recognising unavailability as a legitimate human state.
The Boundary the 2020s Had Removed
From the perspective of 2049, the deeper revolution of the smartphone was therefore not that it made people reachable almost everywhere. It was that it removed much of the natural unreachability that had previously structured social life.
Only after that boundary had weakened did its function become visible.
Unreachability had not merely prevented communication. It had also suspended expectations. Someone who could not be reached did not need to explain why they had not replied. A message that had not yet arrived could not create an open obligation. An office that was closed was simply closed.
Digital communication replaced much of this clarity with flexibility, and in many respects that produced a better world. But flexibility came with a structural requirement that was initially underestimated: people had to recreate boundaries that technology no longer provided for them.
This was the misreading of the 2020s. Reachability appeared to be a property of devices. In practice, it increasingly became a property of relationships.
Relationships do not operate according to the same rules as networks.
A message can be delivered in milliseconds. Attention cannot. A server can remain available continuously. A person cannot. A communication platform can remain permanently online. A human relationship does not have to.
The quality of a communication society therefore cannot be measured only by how quickly people can reach one another. It must also be measured by how naturally that society accepts the interval between reaching someone and receiving a response.
That interval is not empty time.
It is a boundary.
And perhaps one of the mistakes of the 2020s was to remove so many technical boundaries that people temporarily forgot why some boundaries had existed in the first place.
