But focusing only on outcomes creates a blind spot: it tells us nothing about how much additional activity has gradually become necessary in order to keep producing them.

A Practical Way to Look at an Ordinary Day

Where does something need a second attempt? Where do you adjust before continuing? Where is something entered or stored twice? Where do you take an extra route? Where is information checked again despite already being available? Where does a sentence begin with I always do it this way because…?
That final word is particularly revealing.
Because often contains a piece of structural history.
Perhaps the reason is still valid. Perhaps it is not. Either answer is useful because the routine has at least returned to visibility.
A practical observation for the next ordinary day would therefore be simple: do not search for failures and do not try to optimise anything. Notice instead which additional movements have become so familiar that they no longer register as additional movements. One extra click. One habitual search. One second check. One route taken automatically. One small preparation needed before something else will work.
Some of these actions will turn out to be perfectly sensible.
Others may have outlived their reason.
The important part happens before either judgement is made.
The moment an automatic detour becomes recognisable as a detour, it stops being structurally invisible.
