The practice management benchmarking: A new imaging method in ambulatory medicine

Data, facts and instruments on the German health system

What it’s all about

The “classical” medical imaging procedures help physicians to make diagnostic-therapeutic decisions and serve the purpose of monitoring progress. Practice management benchmarking fulfills the same purpose with regard to primary care and specialty physician management with the help of ratios and their presentation.

The benefits of imaging in practice management.

  • Visualization of information: Imaging procedures are used to visually represent information. Medical procedures produce images that help physicians analyze a patient’s condition. Benchmarking, on the other hand, displays data and statistics in the form of graphs, charts or tables to give practice owners a quick overview of their practice’s performance data.
  • Data analysis and interpretation: Both systems process data and support analysis and interpretation. In patient care, imaging helps physicians diagnose diseases and monitor the progress of treatments. Practice management benchmarking analyzes a practice’s performance data compared to best practice standards to identify trends, patterns, or areas for optimization.
  • Monitoring and control: both medical procedures and benchmarking are used to monitor and control relevant information. Medical imaging procedures allow physicians to monitor a patient’s condition and identify changes over time. The dashboard of an operational benchmark allows practice owners to monitor and control performance indicators for all action areas of practice management, from planning to organization, leadership, marketing, patient care, time management and controlling.
  • Decision support: both systems support decision making. In medicine, imaging helps physicians make informed decisions about diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring. Benchmarking provides practice owners with all the relevant information they need for optimizing practice performance and strategic planning.

What imaging does for practice management.

On average, practice owners do not use nearly half of the best practice standard in their practice management. In other words, they are missing an important part of the regulations, tools and behaviors that are essential for practice operations to run smoothly even under changing demands. With the help of practice management benchmarking and the visualization of the results, forty previously unused opportunities for improvement can therefore be identified on average for each practice.
