Management: Detox against team insufficiency

What it’s all about

A major threat to collaborations in „real“ team form is team insufficiency, which is often given too little attention from a leadership and performance perspective.

Team conflicts as a cause of insufficiency

This functional weakness and insufficient performance arises when cooperation no longer functions properly due to conflicts.

Differences of opinion and opinion as well as contrary views are basically productive for team work, provided they proceed impersonally and without emotion on a factual level. However, if this sphere is left behind and things become emotional and personal, conflicts arise which, depending on their nature and intensity, lead to a degeneration of the team status.

The effects

Three forms and intensities can be distinguished here:

  • The least change is the emergence of a community.

It is a mix of the characteristics of the group and the team, but it lacks crucial aspects in the cooperation to achieve a complete synergy of cooperation, which constitute the productivity and efficiency of a team.

  • The next level of degeneration through conflict is the group.

Cooperation that falls into this area is characterised by a low synergy of individual activities: people work together, but always only within the framework that is given. Individual initiative or helping out with problems are rather rare. Although each team member strives to do his or her job well, there is no sustained commitment to continuous improvement.

  • At the end of the scale of possible impacts is the special-purpose association.

Here, work performance is characterised by „service by the book“ and „lone wolf“ behaviour.

„Detoxification“ for teams

This team insufficiency can be countered preventively and curatively with detoxification, or Detox for Teams©. The aim is to protect the cooperation from stressful or even destructive influences or to free it from them. The basis for this is the implementation of a status analysis with the following components:

  • the Teamwork Quality Score (TQS), which indicates the degree of team building and consolidation,
  • the Teamwork Satisfaction Score (TSS), which reflects the overall satisfaction of the team members with the cooperation.
  • a SWOT analysis, which describes the members‘ views on the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of their commonality
  • Team harmony as an indicator of the potential for conflict within the community.
  • the team experience, which identifies barriers and forcing approaches for the development of cooperation synergy.

The result of such an analysis, which can be carried out easily and quickly with the help of only ten questions and a few supplementary details, then makes it possible to determine the type and scope of possible detox measures. Detox against team insufficiency
